Coach Role

  1. RESPONSIBILITIES

    To coach and develop players to play footy to their full potential and in accordance with the rules and spirit of the game and demonstrating the values of South Melbourne Districts

  2. OBJECTIVES

    (a) Before each season

    • Availability: Ensure you’re able to be present for the duration of each training session and match. If you’re unable to be present for the duration of the match, you need to find a suitably qualified replacement or contact our coach coordinator as soon as possible. If there’s no coach present, the match can’t proceed

    • Accreditations: Activate your accreditations as soon as possible and before you commence as coach for the season.  If you’ve not completed your accreditations before the season, you can’t be a coach for the season.  To understand your required accreditations, click here

    • Coach kit bag: Obtain from our coach coordinator the coach kit bag. It should be fully stocked. If you need supplies, contact our coach coordinator

    • Child safety: Be aware of, understand and follow the child safety policies and procedures. To access the child safety policies and procedures, click here

    • Code of conduct: Provide the child safe code of conduct signed by you to your team manager before round 1

    (b) During each season

    • Coach in accordance with the AFL’s coaching accreditation

    • Uphold the AFL coach code of conduct and maintain a standard of acceptable behaviour that is in the best interests of the players and junior footy

    • Develop and implement an appropriate pre-season and season training program

    • Provide advice and instruction to players individually and to the team on fitness, development, skills and tactics

    • Ensure the team is best prepared for each match

    • Provide match day coaching expertise

    • Ensure players, team and volunteers perform in accordance with the rules and spirit of the game and the league’s by-laws

    • Attend the team photo session, presentation session and other activities and events relating to the team and coach development

    (c) Before each match

    • Obtain the red (if coach) or green (if assistant coach) bib from the team manager

    • Introduce yourself to the opposition’s coach

    • Introduce yourself to the team trainer, runner and water carrier

    (d) During each match

    • Give messages to the runner to deliver to players as required

  3. RELATIONSHIPS

    Coach coordinator: To be appointed as coach before each season and as a source of support and development during each season

  4. LEAGUE BY-LAWS

    Must not approach or abuse the field umpire or question the decision of the field umpire

    Must not enter the field during match play and remain stationed on the team bench, except during breaks

    Must maintain team and match roles discipline and instruct players and match roles to act within the rules and spirit of the game
