Girls Footy Program
Play like a girl - you bet we do!
With just 2 girls playing in the girls junior footy program in season 2012, including Isabel Huntington (AFLW), the South Melbourne Districts girls footy program has grown exponentially – with over 100 girls playing in 8 teams in season 2022.
South Melbourne Districts aims to provide girls with a safe, supportive and inclusive environment which develops, promotes and encourages participation in (and enjoyment of) Australian Rules Football.
It doesn’t matter if you’ve played 100 matches or never touched a footy in your life - all skill levels are welcome. Our coaches focus on developing confidence as well as skill acquisition and game sense.
We are part of the South Metro Junior Football League and target to field girls teams in the U10, U11, U12, U13, U14, U15, U16 and U18 age group league competition. Matches are scheduled on Sundays, and girls pre-season squad training and season team training is scheduled on Wednesday evenings commencing in February 2023.
All teams are allocated at least one AFL accredited coach and all team roles are required to have a WWCC. For U8 and U10, the girls play a modified rules match which allows them to develop their skills. As they get older, there’s tackling and games are played on full sized grounds.
As well as fielding teams in the league competition, South Melbourne Districts also operates an Auskick program on Saturday mornings for kids aged 5-12 years old, where girls can participate in mixed groups or separate girls-only junior (kinder to grade 1) and senior (grade 2+) groups. South Melbourne Districts also runs girl-only skills programs, such as the Girls Footy Spring Academy in November each year.
