Sunday was a historic day for the club – U14 Whites and U14 Reds won the flags!
In a historic day for South Melbourne Districts we saw both our Under 14 Reds and Under 14 Whites take out the Division 4 and 2 premierships. Both teams field long standing junior footballers who, after coming through the Under 9 ranks finally got their dream of playing finals footy. And what a great day it was to be!
U14 REDS – PREMIERS!
The day started out with the Div 4 Reds taking on their season rivals East Sandringham. The game started similarly to their last Home & Away defeat with South inaccurate in front of goals before Julian Musco snapped a beauty to put the boys up 12 points at quarter time. The team spirit and work ethic was high and the boys didn’t let up on the pressure kicking four goals to one in the second quarter. Coach Jeremy kept the boys focused on the job and despite losing their outstanding ruckman, and captain, Charlie Thompson with a leg injury, they were able to maintain their convincing half time lead to run out 32 point winners. It was a great team effort with some notable performances from Blaise who starred in Charlie’s absence in the ruck, Jono Green bagging another two goals to record a staggering 53 goals for the season, and best on ground medallist, Malachy Asmah-Brown. Final scores:
SOUTH MELBOURNE RED 7.13 (55) def EAST SANDRINGHAM 3.5 (23)
Congratulations to 1st year (and now Premiership) Coach Jeremy Ratcliffe, long time Team Manager Jennifer Commerford and all the Players and Parents.
U14 WHITES – PREMIERS!
Out to avenge their 2nd semi final loss to Prahran, the Bloods got off to cracking start with Izzy Huntington, in her final game for our club, kicking the first goal of the match in the first 30 seconds. The players were inspired to kick another three goals into the wind playing confident, courageous footy. The second quarter was a tighter contest but a handy break at half time saw Coach Gary calmly address the players and challenge them to win the second half. And what a winning second half it was with the Bloods piling on another 8 goals to 1 for a comprehensive 79 point smashing to claim the flag.
A true team effort with every player contributing to a deserved end to an outstanding season. Some notable performances from Max Capp with a game high 4 goals, Co-Captain Tom Murphy adding another 2 goals to easily finish the competition highest goal scorer for the season, and our talented on-ball group Ben Wardle, Matty March, Zephyr Howson, Zach Patrick and best on ground medalist Harry Gustin, who together worked so hard all day. Final scores:
SOUTH MELBOURNE WHITE 14.12 (96) def PRAHRAN 2.5 (17)
Congratulations to Premiership Coach Gary March, and Team Manager Elaine Stewart, Terrie Palmer and the Players and Parents.

Congratulations to the U14 Premiers in 2012…..
Stomachs churned with anxiety and parents paced up and down, as a thriller played out at Le Page Park’s smallest ground where District’s undefeated record for the season was significantly challenged when Hampton snatched the lead for two quarters. In a resounding and thrilling last quarter, the lead see-sawed twice with only minutes to go. With true spirit, the Bloods dug deep and found what it takes, running out two goal winners. It was an exciting and fantastic game of footy to watch.
Congratulations to Coach Brendan Maloney for his years of devotion and hard work with the boys; to Assistant Coach, David O’Connell; to Team Manager, Carmel Benson; and to all the parents and Club supporters who came along to make it a great day. It was a fitting culmination to Season 2012.
For a full match report, see the August 28 eNews with Fixtures & Results….and Cheer Cheer the Red and the White with the boys as they sing the winning song with great gusto!
And to our U16s, congratulations on a great year of outstanding footy…..
In a terrific game of skilled football, South Melbourne District’s U16 team went down by only 5 points to Mordi-Brae. The weather was kind enough, although a strong breeze assisted from time-to-time.
Behind at the last change, Districts came on strongly and had the ball in their 50 metre zone for most of the quarter, peppering the goals with enough shots to win. But the Mordi-Brae defence proved to be too strong, getting touches to more shots than we wanted to count, and so the points, not goals, reflected on the scoreboard.
A great game and a great effort by all the players, Coach Kane Killip and Asst. Coach Tom Kelly and Team Manager, John Durie, and, of course, parents who have supported the team all year.
U11 Red line up as the National Anthem is played before their Grand Final on August 19, 2012.
A valiant and hard-fought match on a soggy and boggy Le Page Park saw the Bloods go down to Northvale. Although not bringing home the flag, the team is to be congratulated on a terrific effort for the season. Thanks and congratulations to Coach, Carlo Musco, Asst. Coach, Simon Matthews and Team Manager, Pat O'Mahoney for all their hard work during the season.
Many thanks also to all the parents, friends and Club members who came to support the boys on a very cold but, thankfully, dry Sunday morning.
Some spectacular action from the U16s Prelim Final vs Northvale on August 19, 2012, as they make their way to the Grand Final next Sunday!
And Club Mascot…“Sunny” Holdsworth!
